Losing a pet is difficult at any age, but it's especially hard for children. As you comfort them, try to explain the pet's death in age-appropriate terms. Virginia Rud, a Certified Veterinary Technician and an Instructor at the Minnesota School of Business, says it's important to answer questions honestly. Avoid euphemisms.

Rud says, “avoid ‘put to sleep’ because children really do not understand the difference between them going to bed at night and their pet being put to sleep.”

Some kids may even think that their pet's death is a punishment for their own naughty behavior, so make sure they know that it’s not their fault. Above all, let kids grieve in their own way, and let them know you understand their sadness.
