Pets and children make a heart-warming combo. But safely bringing a kitten into a home with young children takes vigilance. When the little fur ball arrives, set her up in a safe room that young kids can’t enter. Let the kitten settle in before introducing her to children. Then teach one child at a time how to properly pet, pick up, and play with the kitten. Teach kids that kittens should not be disturbed when sleeping, eating, or using the litter box.
Children must learn not to pull kitty’s tail or ears, squeeze or poke her, make loud, threatening noises, or move toward her too rapidly. Even a gentle feline may scratch or bite when frightened. Don’t leave a kitten and a child alone together until you are sure both are safe.
