Although cats tend to be independent, they can also be very social creatures. So when two familiar cats encounter each other, they generally stop to say hello. Typically, friendly cats greet each other by touching noses or rubbing their faces together. It’s almost like a hello kiss, or a peck on either cheek.
If you’re sitting down within reach, your cat might mimic this behavior when he sees you. He might also roll over and reveal his stomach – letting you know how safe he feels around you. Most commonly, however, a cat will rub against your legs. This activity is called bunting. When a cat rubs against you, he leaves his scent - essentially marking you as “his.”
