It takes years of schooling to become a doctor of veterinary medicine. If you’re thinking about pursuing such a career, ask yourself if you are interested in the natural world and do well in biology classes. If so, study hard and consider interning for a local veterinarian. There are fewer than thirty veterinary school in the U.S., so admission is competitive.
After graduation, there are a lot of possible career paths for veterinarians. After all, just about anywhere you find animals, you’ll find vets – from zoos to movie sets. So in addition to working in a clinic or private practice, a veterinarian could choose to work in the biotechnology industry, in animal shelters, or in public health agencies.
