Much is known about hip dysplasia in dogs. But dysplasia - abnormal joint development - can also affect a dog's elbows. Elbow dysplasia most often affects rapidly-growing large breed dogs, such as German Shepherds, Great Danes, and Newfoundlands. Genetics, trauma, and overeating may all contribute to elbow dysplasia. While not all affected dogs are young, most show signs - such as reduced activity, stiffness, joint swelling, and limping – within a year of age.
Reducing weight can help relieve pressure on the elbows. Anti-inflammatory and pain medications - or surgery in severe cases - are other options. The sooner your dog gets treatment, the better his chances for a long and mobile life.
