How can I successfully introduce a puppy into a house with a cat?

Introducing a new pup to a home with a cat takes patience and prudence to keep the peace. When the puppy arrives, barricade him behind a baby gate in one room, but let the two pets sniff each other.

In a few days, walk the pup around the house on a leash. Allow a curious cat to approach, but stay on guard for hostilities. If either strikes out, say “no” and pick up the pup. Praise each for calm encounters.

When tensions subside, let the puppy move freely about the house, but make sure the cat has a safe retreat, such as a ledge. Separate the pets when you go out, and keep the cat’s litter box and food bowl out of puppy’s reach. Not all felines and canines will become buddies, but most can live together harmoniously.
